My decision on the brief - music video

After doing a lot of research about my options I have decided that I am going to create a music video because I think I will be able to create something more real to life and of a better quality. I would also like to work in the music industry in the future so this could help me and I'm more interested in music than television.

My brief:

1) A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following options:
  • a website home page for the band
  • a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package)
  • a magazine advert for the digipak (CD/DVD package)

Wicked Wyldes - Emmerdale trailer

The clips that are used in this trailer are very cleverly chosen and I especially like the use of close ups showing the character's facial expressions very well. The music that is used over the film builds the tension very well and makes the video.

Hollyoaks - Enchanted Forest trailer

This trailer is very simple as it is not filmed on the set of Hollyoaks. Creating something like this could be more simple and I think it could be a lot of fun to do. Although this trailer is very creative it doesn't really tell you much about the programme and what is going to happen in it which to me doesn't make it a very good trailer for the show. The costumes are great and the hair and make-up has been done very well and matches the costumes.

The Jackson 5 - Eastenders trailer

I really like the idea of this trailer. It is fun, catches the audiences attention (whether for a good reason or a bad one) and introduces the characters very well. We also get to see bits of the set as they dance through the streets and other established characters when we see close-ups of them. The costumes are what the characters will be expected to be seen in during real episodes and this could be adapted to use more than one setting such as houses, a shop, a restaurant etc. This could be very fun to re-create.

Eastenders - Judgement day for Max trailer

This trailer is very effective and definitely builds up a tension that is portrayed to the viewers. I like the fact this isn't filmed on the Eastenders set which creates more impact and the theme of the trailer is very clever after Max has been having an affair with his son's wife. The colour scheme and costumes in this clip are very simple and set the mood of the video.

Branning brothers trailer (Eastenders)

This is the trailer that the BBC used for Eastenders when Max and Derek Branning were returning to the square. I like the amount of drama that is used in this clip and it is very simple as it only includes one family (and Pat) and there aren't many different sets. A lot of what is shown can be filmed in one house and the rest of it is set on the square. It is very effective. It doesn't give too much away (apart from the fact they're returning) and leaves us in suspense.

My thoughts

After reviewing the three original options I had looked at, I have decided I now have to make a decision between the music videos and the soap opera. What is stopping me from making the decision straight away is the fact I would love to create the soap trailer but I am worried I wouldn't be able to make it realistic enough with the right amount of characters and sets. The music video could be made simpler if I just use on person as a solo artist but I would really like to push myself.

Things I need to consider when making my decision

For the music video:
  • What genre of music I would like to choose
  • Which artist's song I would like to use
  • What they should wear
  • Where I can shoot the video and how many locations I need
  • If I need to use props
  • If I need dancers/actors
  • Solo artist or band
  • Whether they will be playing an instrument

For the soap:
  • What genre it would cover if any
  • How many different sets/locations I will need to make it realistic (pub, restaurant, home)
  • What costumes I will need and how many
  • How many characters I will need (3/4 families, 3/4 groups of friends)
  • Story lines and scripts
  • Jobs characters have (shop keeper, land lord, restaurant owner)
  • Realistic props

Locations available to me:
  • Homes
  • College
  • Public areas (parks, streets,etc)
  • Police station - need to ask dad
  • Countryside
  • Prince of India - need to ask Jame
  • New York
  • Crete (beaches, pool,clubs)
  • Jersey

Money:
  • Set
  • Props
  • Petrol
  • Hair
  • Make-up
  • Costumes
  • Renting places out if I need to

People I can use/will need:
  • Friends
  • Family
  • Driver
  • Hair/make-up artists (if needs be)
  • Costume help
